Generation 7 remains very widely deployed in production: it supports older hardware than generation 8, which makes it a sensible choice for servers already in place.

64-bit x86 servers compatible with vSphere 7 according to the VMware hardware compatibility list. This generation accepts older controllers and network cards than version 8. Shared storage is required to take advantage of the cluster features.

Activation

Your licence keys are sent by e-mail within 24 hours maximum. Install the hypervisor, deploy the vCenter Server appliance, then enter the keys in the licence management section of the administration interface for each component.
