Windows Server 2022 Datacenter – Server Licence (unlimited virtual machines)

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is the edition designed for highly virtualised environments and hyperconverged infrastructures. It differs from the Standard edition in two major respects: an unlimited number of Windows virtual machines on the licensed hardware (Standard stops at 2), and full access to software-defined storage and networking. The break-even point is generally around three VMs per host.

The 2022 foundation

Secured-core server (TPM 2.0, secure boot, code integrity via the hypervisor), SMB AES-256 encryption and SMB over QUIC, TLS 1.3 by default, Windows Admin Center, WDAC application control. Extended support ensured until October 2031.

CALs remain mandatory

Even in the Datacenter edition, the server licence does not cover access: each connected user or device requires a Windows Server 2022 CAL, and any Remote Desktop session demands an additional RDS CAL. CALs are legal rights, not software to install, and RDS CALs add to the Windows Server CALs.
