Max Payne – Steam key

Max Payne is the third-person shooter that put the Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment on the map in 2001. You play as a New York police officer whose family has been murdered and who plunges alone into the city's underworld, in the middle of a snowstorm, to trace the trail of a synthetic drug. The story is told in the form of comic-book panels between levels, with a voice-over in the tone of a noir novel.

The game

• The invention of bullet time — slowing down time while keeping normal-speed aiming and diving to the side while shooting: a mechanic that became a benchmark of the genre.
• Linear, dense progression — warehouse corridors, New York buildings, hotels and offices, with close-quarters gunfights where every mistake is costly.
• Classic arsenal — Beretta, pump-action shotgun, Ingram, Desert Eagle, Molotov cocktails and grenades, to collect from enemies.
• Dream sequences — labyrinthine nightmare passages that break completely from the rest of the game.
• Comic-book narration — the interludes are drawn and voiced, a deliberate staging choice that became part of the game's identity.

Open Steam, go to Games then Activate a Product on Steam and enter the key received. The title is then permanently linked to your account. As the game is old, it may require a few compatibility tweaks under modern Windows; the Steam version incorporates the fixes needed to launch.

System requirements

Extremely light: any current Windows PC far exceeds the game's needs. A few hundred megabytes are enough for the installation. The title is designed for period resolutions, but generally copes with widescreen displays.
