Windows 10 Education N is the European variant of the Education edition, distributed as a Retail licence for 1 PC. The N suffix has a precise meaning: these versions are delivered without Windows Media Player or the associated media apps, following the European Commission's competition decisions. The rest of the system is identical.

What « N » removes exactly

• Windows Media Player absent — as well as the audio and video playback and encoding components that depend on it.
• Media apps not installed — Groove Music, Films & TV, Voice Recorder, the Camera app and Skype are not provided.
• Practical consequence — some third-party software that relies on these codecs may refuse to start until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
• Solution — Microsoft offers this Media Feature Pack free of charge as an optional feature, which restores the missing components in a few minutes.

The features of the Education edition

The Education edition corresponds to the functional level of Windows 10 Enterprise: BitLocker, AppLocker, Credential Guard, Application Guard, incoming Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, domain or Microsoft Entra ID join, Group Policy and advanced update management. Promotional content and Microsoft Store suggestions are disabled by default and Take a Test mode allows a workstation to be locked down during an assessment.

Activation

The activation key arrives by email within 24 hours maximum. Note: an « N » key activates on an installation of Windows 10 in the N edition. Download the corresponding image from Microsoft's site, install it, then enter the code in Settings › Activation.
