Windows 11 Education N is the European variant of the Education edition, as a Retail licence for 1 PC. The letter N has a precise meaning: these versions are delivered without Windows Media Player or the associated media apps, in accordance with the European Commission's competition decisions. The rest of the system is rigorously identical to the standard Education edition.

What the « N » designation removes

• Windows Media Player and the audio and video playback and encoding components that depend on it are not installed.
• Media apps absent — Films & TV, Voice Recorder, the Camera app, Clipchamp and Groove are not provided.
• Practical consequence — some third-party software requiring these codecs may refuse to work while they are missing.
• Official solution — the Media Feature Pack, free from Microsoft, is added in a few minutes from the optional features and restores the components.

The features of the Education edition

Technically, the Education edition is equivalent to Windows 11 Enterprise: BitLocker, AppLocker, Credential Guard, Application Guard, incoming Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, domain or Microsoft Entra ID join, Group Policy and advanced update management. Suggestions and promotional content are disabled by default and Take a Test mode allows a workstation to be locked down during an assessment.

Activation

The activation key reaches you by email within 24 hours maximum. Important point: an « N » key activates on an installation of Windows 11 in the N edition. Download the corresponding image from Microsoft, install it, then enter the code in Settings › System › Activation.
